In advance of Governor Cuomo’s State of the State address slated for January 15, 2019, NY Renews -- a coalition of over 150 environmental justice, labor, and community organizing groups across the state -- issued the following statement:

NY Renews is glad that Governor Cuomo has made confronting the climate crisis a part of his “Justice Agenda,” and we urge him to make the Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA) the framework for a New York climate plan rooted in the fight for racial and economic justice.

The CCPA is a thorough, equitable roadmap to a 100% renewable energy economy already endorsed by Assembly and Senate leadership and drafted by a statewide coalition of environmental justice, labor, and community organizations.

The Assembly has passed the CCPA for the past three years and just last week Speaker Heastie again made the CCPA a priority. Last year a majority of State Senators signed on as sponsors, and this year, the new Senate majority has signaled similar strong support – including incoming Environmental Conservation Committee Chair Senator Todd Kaminsky.

The CCPA specifically directs investment in black, brown, and low-income communities that have suffered the most from fossil fuel pollution and climate risks -- and mandates that green jobs have fair wages and labor standards. Climate change solutions rooted in justice must come from the communities with the most at stake. The Climate & Community Protection Act has been and will represent the true “Climate Justice Agenda” for NY.
