A November 2025 report compiled by watchdog and trade groups LittleSis, NY Renews and the Strong Economy for All Coalition shows lobbying spending from 17 heavy polluting corporations and lobbying groups for polluting industries rose by more than 52% between 2021 and 2024. The report noted Buffalo-based National Fuel increased its spending by 147% in that period. The company didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the issue.
And several of the firms working with the corporations involved in the push to stop cap-and-invest have ties to the Hochul administration, according to the report. A partner of one of the firms is the spouse of a top Hochul aide, the report states, while a shareholder and polluter lobbyist at another firm is a former state senator and several of the firms held high-dollar fundraisers for the governor in her first few months in the position.
