New York Climate Law Delay Draws Environmentalist Rebuke

New York lawmakers and environmental advocates have rallied against Governor Kathy Hochul's proposal to delay emissions deadlines and cap-and-invest rules from 2030 to 2040, citing that it will increase costs for New Yorkers and cause the state to remain dependent on volatile fossil fuels. The delay would cost New Yorkers over $8,500 per household in energy bills over five years, according to the NY Renews coalition, and result in 150,000 lost jobs and up to $60 billion in lost local revenue. Environmental advocates and labor representatives have criticized the proposal, citing that it is a smoke-and-mirrors giveaway to corporate polluters.
